Problem Statement
How can we address the environmental and ethical impacts of our digital footprint in an era where social media and app usage dominate daily life? With rising data privacy concerns and digital inequality, why is it so difficult for users to translate awareness into meaningful action?

Design Challenge
The challenge is to design a platform that enables users to monitor and analyse their digital footprint across various online activities, including social media usage and app interactions. the solution should leverage personalised insights, behavioral change techniques, and nudges to empower users to take action, reduce their digital footprint and cultivate more sustainable and ethical digital consumption habits.
Design Process
The design process was structured around five key stages: Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test. This approach involved in-depth research, user-centric ideation, iterative prototyping, and high-fidelity design, all validated through continuous user testing. By involving users at each stage, the process ensured a design that was both empathetic and finely tuned to their needs.
Empathise
-
Gathered insights about user needs and pain points through research and interviews to understand user experiences and expectations.
-
Created user personas and UX vision statements to represent different segments of the target audience.
-
Mapped out the user journey to identify touchpoints and pain points.
Define
-
Brainstormed potential solutions based on user needs and research insights.
-
Defined the flow of users through the system to ensure a smooth experience.
-
Organized the structure and hierarchy of content for the digital product.
Ideate
-
Created rough sketches to visualize initial ideas and concepts.
-
Developed basic wireframes to outline the layout and structure of the design.
-
Established a design language to ensure consistency in visuals and interactions.
Test
-
Conducted tests with users to get feedback on the design's usability and effectiveness.
-
Refined the design based on user feedback and testing results.
Prototype
-
Developed detailed design prototypes to closely resemble the final product.
-
Created final mock-ups to represent the completed design for stakeholder review.
Next Steps
-
Finalized the design after iterating based on user testing feedback.
-
Documented potential future improvements and considerations for the design.
Research & Analysis
Secondary Research
My team and I conducted extensive secondary research focused on Gen Z's digital footprint and cloud storage habits. We explored existing studies, industry reports, and user behavior data to gain a deeper understanding of how this generation interacts with digital platforms and the environmental implications of cloud storage. This research informed our approach to designing solutions that resonate with Gen Z's values and usage patterns.
How does this tech-savvy generation shape the digital landscape?

What traces are we leaving behind in our online activities?
Where is our data really going, and at what cost?

Primary Research
Our research explored participants' digital habits, uncovering their desire to reduce app usage for better real-life connections. Most were unaware of their digital footprint but open to learning. There was also limited awareness of the environmental impact of cloud storage.

User Persona

UX Vision Statement
We believe there is an opportunity to create a solution for young adults (Generation Z) based on their habitual engagement with online content.
In order to build awareness and accountability on how they share and store their data and make informed decisions to reduce and minimise their digital footprint.
So that they gain a deeper understanding of how data is actualised rather than something ubiquitous in order to cultivate sustainable and ethical digital consumption habits.
Design Opportunities
Raise awareness and accountability regarding digital footprints.
Provide tangible tools and information to track, manage, and reduce environmental impact.
Empower users to make informed decisions about digital consumption.
Foster community engagement and collective action towards reducing digital carbon footprints.
User Prioritisation
My team and I came up with numerous potential features using the Crazy 8's ideation method. We then decided which features to implement by utilizing our priority matrix and the MoSCoW method.

User Testing

We got some mixed reactions in terms of timing. For both goal setting and how often users get their detox wrapped. So we decided to have the user set this.

Users would prefer a more personalised offline event recommendation system. They would like to tell Avi what they actually want to do and have offline events tailored to them.

We learned that users needed more indicators on the challenges page. We added a points system, as well a star to indicate the winner.

We learned that the user prefers personification over a numerical indicator of AviTracks community impact.
Stakeholder Mapping
We crafted a stakeholder map to pinpoint the diverse individuals, groups, and organizations connected to our project, AviTrack. This allowed us to categorize stakeholders based on their level of influence and interest, helping us prioritize engagement strategies. By understanding their varying needs and expectations, we ensured that our design decisions would align with both user and stakeholder objectives, fostering better collaboration and project alignment organisations connected to our project, AviTrack.

How AviTrack Addresses The Problem
The Solution

The Avi app tracks and personifies the user's digital footprint, making the environmental impact tangible and relatable through Avi’s well-being
Problem
Users often overlook the environmental impact of
their digital activities.
The Solution
The app incorporates behavioural change techniques such as feedback, behaviour steering and gamification . These features provide users with tools and motivation to modify their habits and reduce digital usage
Problem
Users struggle to translate awareness into meaningful
behavioral changes.
The Solution
The app offers personalised insights and practical tips to help users understand their digital footprint and how to reduce it. This information empowers users to make sustainable choices while also representing the collective effort through the community Avi. This fosters a sense of community responsibility.
Problem
Users lack the knowledge to make informed decisions about their digital consumption. They often feel their efforts are insignificant in the broader context.
Future Considerations
Emotional Engagement: Develop deeper emotional connections through Avi the bird by adding more interactive and responsive features, such as personalized messages and achievements.
1
Data Privacy and Security: Continually update security protocols to protect user data, addressing concerns particularly pertinent to Generation Z.
2
Impact Measurement: Implement advanced metrics to accurately measure the
environmental impact of users' digital habits and the overall success of the Community Avi.
3
How the app can be useful to the user once they have achieved low usage/low digital footprint? Would we make the app more of a offline events space/tracking without any specific goals?
